ELIZABETH AYALA - FIRM ADMINISTRATOR/PARALEGAL
Elizabeth (Lisa) is a life long resident of Toledo,
Ohio. She attended and graduated from
Waite High School. She later went on to
graduate from Stautzenberger College as an
Office Specialist. She is the proud parent of one
son and one American Pitbull Terrier (Chico).
She is a cancer survivor and an avid sports fan.
Specifically, she loves the Detroit Pistons and
the Superbowl XLI winning Indianapolis Colts.
When not working her many jobs she enjoys long
walks in the parks, time with friends and family,
and also vacationing. She joined the Law Office
of Kurt M. Young, LLC only one month after it's
inception, as a receptionist. Since that time
Lisa has become the Firm Administrator.
LeAnne is a graduate of
Stautzenberger College's
Paralegal Program. She did
her internship with our office
and upon graduation was
hired immediately. She and
her son are Toledo residents.
Stephanie Prater - Paralegal
Like LeAnne, Stephanie is a
graduate of Stautzenger
College's Paralegal Program
and joined us after
completing her internship
with our office. She, her
husband and children are
residents of Wablridge
Lloyd Grant - Law Clerk
Lloyd is a graduate of the University of Connecticut. He also
hold a law degree. He is the former Toledo Regional Hearing
Administrator of the Industrial Commission of Ohio. Before
serving the people of Ohio with the Industrial Commission,
Lloyd represented employers defending their rights on
workers' compensation claims. He also served a United
States Marine Corps Officer with distinction in Vietnam. He
is semi-retired and lives with his wife in Toledo.
Kurt M. Young - Attorney
Kurt Young is a 1990 graduate of the University of Akron with
a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a 1993 Graduate
of Case Western Reserve University's School
of Law. He is licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio
and the Federal District Court for the Northern District of
Ohio.
Kurt is one of the first Ohio State Bar Association Board
Certified Specialists in Ohio Workers' Compensation Law.In
2005. 2006 and 2007, Law and Politics Magazine named Kurt
Young as an Ohio Super Lawyer Rising Star (recognizing him
as one of the Top 2.5 % of Ohio's attorneys in the area of
Ohio Workers' Compensation Law under the age of 40 or with
less than 10 years in the practice of law).
He has argued over 7,000 hearings before all levels of the Industrial Commission of Ohio and
has litigated cases before various Courts of Common Pleas and District Courts of Appeals
throughout Ohio and has over a dozen published Court of Appeals and Ohio Supreme Court
decisions.
Kurt has been an adjunct instructor of Administrative Law (Social Security Disability
and Workers' Compensation) at Stautzenberger College in Toledo and his firm still serves as an
externship site for this program. He also regularly presents to the Legal Assisting Program at
the University of Toledo as well.
He is the Chair of Toledo Bar Association's Workers' Compensation Committee for 2010-2012,
past President of the Northwest Ohio Claimant's Attorneys, Past Chair of the Ohio Academy of
Trial Lawyers, now known as Ohio Association for Justice, Workers' Compensation Executive
Committee, Past Ohio Captain of the Work Injury Law & Advocacy Group (national workers'
compensation attorneys organization) and a member of the Ohio State Bar Association
Workers' Compensation Committee, and American Association for Justice Work Place Injury
Committee.
Kurt has presented seminar topics to the Toledo Bar Association Yearly Workers' Compensation
Seminar and Ohio Academy of Trial Lawyers Fall and Summer Seminars, serving as
co-moderator for all 2005-2007
Kurt is also a member of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity International
(where is the former Justice of the John Hay and Cleveland Alumni
Chapters and former District XIV District Justice)), Phi Kappa Psi
(social fraternity), and Omicron Delta Kappa (national leadership
honorary).
Kurt is active in The Village Church Northwest Ohio, a joint project of the United Church of
Christ and the United Methodist Church where he serves as the church's general counsel and
Worship Tech Team Co-Director and Outreach Director. He is also active in Toledo Area Jobs
With Justice and Interfaith Worker Justice, an organization that brings together labor unions,
the faith community and others to fight for workplace safety, living wages, and good benefits
for working men and women.
Kurt is married and the father of two Children. He and his family are residents of Toledo's Old
West End, a diverse neighborhood in the inner city of Toledo.
LeAnne Evans - Paralegal
Russell Gerney - Attorney (of counsel)
Russell Gerney is a sole practitioner currently of counsel with the Law Offices of Kurt M. Young,
LLC. Russ has been a sole practitioner since April 2010 and he began his affiliation with Mr.
Young’s office in August 2010. Russ’ practice consists of Social Security cases, personal injury
cases and civil defense for uninsured individuals. He also has written an amicus brief on behalf
of the Ohio Association for Justice since becoming a sole practitioner. He has also presented at
several seminars on the topic of handling Social Security disability cases.
Russ graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown in 1986. After
spending several years in the hospitality industry Russ began working as a counselor for troubled
youth.
Following his interest in helping others, Russ entered law school at the Duquesne University
School of Law. He graduated in 2003 cum laude.
Russ initially worked for a small firm in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While there his practice
consisted primarily of workers compensation, Social Security and personal injury. Russ left
Pittsburgh and moved to Toledo in early 2005.
Russ became licensed to practice in Ohio in May, 2006. He was hired to work at a large firm in
Toledo. Russ worked primarily in the personal injury division and the Social Security division of
this firm for almost four years.
In addition to practicing law, Russ has written numerous scholarly articles. He has been
published in the Duquesne Law Review (2004) and four times in Ohio Trial between 2007 and
2010.
Russ is licensed to practice in Ohio and Pennsylvania. He is also admitted to practice before the
following federal courts: the United States Supreme Court; the United States Court of Appeals
for the Sixth Circuit; the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit; the United States
District Court, Northern District of Ohio; and the United States District Court, Western District of
Pennsylvania.
Russ has two children (a daughter and a son) and a fiancée.
As both a counselor and as an attorney, Russ has spent close to two decades helping people.
